Most conservatories are too hot to sit in by June and too cold to bother with by October. A warm roof replaces the glass or polycarbonate with a fully insulated, tiled roof — so the room stops being a greenhouse and starts being part of the house.

A bathroom is the room where a small amount of good design goes the furthest. Opening up the layout, losing the bath nobody uses and putting in a proper walk-in shower can make a small room feel twice the size — and make it far easier to use every day.

A kitchen is the biggest single job most people do to a house, and the one where a bad fit shows up fastest — doors that don't line up, a worktop join in the wrong place, a socket behind the kettle you can't reach. It's worth getting the fitting right even when the units come from elsewhere.

Windows and doors do more for how a house feels — and how it looks from the pavement — than almost anything else you can spend the same money on. They're also where a lot of heat quietly leaves.

Plastering is the trade where the difference between adequate and good is obvious to everyone and explicable by nobody. A flat, properly polished wall takes paint evenly and makes everything you put against it look better.

Nobody has ever been excited about a fascia board. But rotten timber and split guttering is how water gets into a roof, a wall and eventually a ceiling, and it's a great deal cheaper to sort before that happens than after.
